Leave of Absence

Request a Leave of Absence
Sometimes you need time away from work to take care of critical personal needs, such as recovering from an illness or injury, caring for a sick family member, or welcoming a new baby into your family. The Hartford, Sysco’s leave administrator, will help you through the process.
To request a leave, call The Hartford at 1-877-215-3440.
If it is your first time taking a leave, go to thehartford.com/mybenefits to register for an account.
Notice Requirement
When a leave is foreseeable, you must notify your supervisor and The Hartford at least 30 days before it begins.
If a leave is not foreseeable, you must notify your supervisor and The Hartford within 48 hours after the need for a leave is known.
If you don’t meet the notice requirement, your leave may be delayed or denied.
If you aren’t sure whether you are eligible for leave (or if a leave applies to your situation), contact The Hartford. They will answer your questions and tell you which types of leave you may be eligible for, including federal, state, and Sysco leave benefits.

Coordinating with State Leaves
Several states offer paid leave benefits related to FMLA and disability leave. Colleagues working in states that provide a paid leave benefit must contact both The Hartford and their state for claims and funds processing. Some states cover the full amount of eligible leave payments, and some states cover a portion of eligible leave payments. Sysco Leave of Absence-related benefits (e.g., STD, pregnancy leave, parental leave, etc.) run with state-paid benefits and are payable as an offset to colleagues receiving a state-paid benefit.
More information about state-paid leaves can be found here and by accessing The Hartford's Employee Leave of Absence Resources here.
Leave Benefits
Paid Pregnancy Leave
Sysco supports birth mothers in taking the time they need to rest and recover after childbirth. Sysco provides all birth mothers with six weeks of leave with full pay after the birth of their child. Pregnancy leaves are concurrent with short-term disability, as well as FMLA leave.
Paid Parental Leave*
Sysco offers paid parental leave to eligible colleagues who are birth parents or have become parents through adoption or surrogacy. Colleagues who serve as a child’s primary or secondary caregiver are eligible for this benefit.
Eligible colleagues must meet the following criteria:
- Be benefits-eligible—New hire benefits begin on the first of the month on or after 31 days from the hire date.
- Be a full-time colleague—Part-time or temporary colleagues and interns are not eligible for this benefit.
Eligible colleagues will:
- Receive up to 10 days or 80 hours of paid parental leave taken continuously in one week or 40 hour increments of continuous time, unless otherwise required by applicable state/local law, following the birth, adoption, or surrogacy of the child to be used within the first 6 months of birth or adoption date.
- Coordinate days off with their manager and HR representative, 30 days in advance, by completing the Parental Leave Request Form.
- Register their parental leave and/or FMLA with Sysco’s leave administrator, The Hartford, by calling 1-877-215-3440. Proof of birth or adoption documentation will be required to receive parental leave.
* Available to U.S. non-union colleagues covered by Sysco-sponsored benefits. Parental leave benefits are reduced by state-paid benefits and will run concurrently with FMLA or state requirements.
